If you’ve seen our vans out and about recently, you may have noticed that things are looking a little different!

Over the past few months, we’ve been refreshing our fleet with new vans featuring our updated branding and colour scheme. While some of our trusted older vans are still very much part of the team, seeing the old and new side by side is a great reminder of how our business continues to evolve.

Our original vans have been with us through countless jobs and have played a huge part in helping us build the reputation we’re proud of today. They continue to serve us well, and they’ll remain an important part of our fleet as we continue to grow.

The addition of our new vans is about more than just updating our appearance. They represent our ongoing investment in the business, helping us improve efficiency, reliability, and the overall service we provide to our customers. The fresh branding also reflects who we are today—a modern, growing business that’s always looking for ways to improve.

Although our look is changing, our values remain exactly the same. We’re still committed to providing the friendly, reliable, and professional service our customers have always known us for. This fleet refresh is just one of the exciting developments.

Looking Back, Moving Forward

Over the past few months, we’ve made some exciting improvements to our fleet, replacing our older vans with a brand-new, modern fleet.

Looking at our old and new vans side by side really highlights how far we’ve come. Our previous vans served us incredibly well over the years, helping us support our customers every day. They’ll always be a big part of our journey, and we’re grateful for everything they helped us achieve.

Our new vans have already made a real difference. They offer improved reliability, greater efficiency, and a professional new look that reflects the high standards we aim to deliver. Investing in our fleet is just one of the ways we’re continuing to improve our service and ensure we’re ready for the future.

This wasn’t just about replacing vehicles—it was about investing in our business, our team, and our customers. Every improvement we make is focused on providing an even better experience for the people who trust us.

We’re proud of how far we’ve come, but we’re even more excited about what’s ahead. The new fleet marks another milestone in our journey, and it’s just one of many improvements we’re making as we continue to grow and develop.

A huge thank you to all of our customers for your continued support. We look forward to serving you for many years to come—and we’re excited to see where the road takes us next.

In the complex world of fire safety, staying updated with the latest regulations is paramount. As of 8th January 2024, the Fire Industry Association (FIA) has brought to light significant updates to the BS 5306-8 standard, marking a pivotal moment in fire extinguisher guidelines. Spearheading these changes is Robert Thilthorpe, FIA’s Technical Manager in Fire Safety, who sheds light on the crucial revisions aimed at enhancing safety and sustainability.

The revised British Standard, BS 5306-8: 2023, sets forth new criteria for the selection and installation of fire extinguishers. This overhaul reflects a concerted effort to align requirements with contemporary best practices, ensuring that fire safety measures evolve in tandem with emerging challenges and technological advancements.

One of the most noteworthy amendments lies in the expansion of clause 4, which delves into the intricacies of different extinguishing media and their firefighting properties. This comprehensive guidance serves to demystify the use of powder extinguishers indoors while offering a well-rounded approach to selecting extinguishing media. By empowering users with nuanced insights, the revised standard enables informed decision-making, thereby fortifying fire preparedness across diverse settings.

A hallmark feature of BS 5306-8: 2023 is its emphasis on collaboration between responsible persons and service providers. By fostering a symbiotic relationship, the standard ensures that specifications for fire extinguishers are not merely compliant but tailored to the unique exigencies of individual environments. This ethos underscores a proactive approach to fire safety, wherein stakeholders work in concert to mitigate risks and optimise protective measures.

The updated standard also issues a cautionary advisory regarding the use of water-based extinguishers on fires involving electrical equipment—a pivotal consideration in today’s techno-centric landscape. Moreover, new guidelines address the handling of fires involving batteries, with a particular focus on lithium-ion batteries prevalent in small mobile devices. Recognising the proliferation of such technologies, the standard endeavours to equip stakeholders with the requisite knowledge to navigate emergent fire hazards effectively.

As a group we’ve been raising concerns about the wide-spread coverage relating to lithium-ion batteries and the dangers they have across several sectors we look after, in particularly multiple-occupancy buildings such as Student Accommodation, PBSA and Social Housing.

Furthermore, BS 5306-8: 2023 revises the guidance pertaining to the number of A-rated extinguishers required in small premises. While areas under 50m² necessitate only one A-rated extinguisher, spaces exceeding 50m² mandate a minimum of two—a pragmatic adjustment tailored to spatial considerations and risk profiles.

For a detailed overview of the principal changes introduced by the 2023 version of BS 5306-8 and what it means for your business, speak to us today.

Our clients frequently praise our help desk and engineers for the brilliant customer service we offer.

And as this week is National Customer Service Week, we thought we’d celebrate some of the ways in which our customer service teams and engineers at CDS, APS, Drax 360, Genex and Brunel have helped clients out of a fix or ‘just’ given them a warm fuzzy feeling of being looked after.

The week, organised by The Institute of Customer Service, shines a light on the important role played by the frontline people who ensure even the most complex of activities runs smoothly.

It highlights a different aspect of customer service every day.

Monday looks at the impact of AI on customer service. It shares research on how, while artificial intelligence has the potential to revolutionise the way we interact with customers, it poses challenges when used as an alternative to human skills. The research looks at the future role of AI and the ethical and social issues it presents.

On Tuesday, the focus is on respect. With the cost-of-living crisis leading to consumers being under more stress, the day looks at how frontline workers can be protected from abuse.

Wednesday examines how customer service has evolved into a profession – and the pivotal role it plays in enabling a company to be successful.

Thursday focuses on sustainable growth and how the customer service team can help companies grow in an environmentally friendly way.

And Friday is a chance for companies to shout about some of their customer service heroes.

Obsequio group CEO Simon Abley said: “For some companies, customer service is regarded as a ‘nice to have’ rather than a value. While each of our companies has a specific customer service desk whose skills lie in juggling the complex pieces of a jigsaw – such as lining up engineer availability and service capacity, it is something every single member of the team offers.

“The engineer installing life safety equipment at a hospital or carrying out water testing at a leisure centre is the face of the company, just as much as the person answering the phone to respond to an emergency. It is this experience, as well our decades of expertise in the compliance sector, which ensures our customers return year after year.

“Yes, we provide a vital service in terms of safety and compliance, but doing that with surly colleagues could send clients running off to find a friendlier alternative. We pride ourselves on the fact that we treat our customers as fellow human beings. Excellent customer service runs through our veins like the letters through a stick of rock.

“And this week we want to show our gratitude and support for the colleagues who help our valued customers and ensure they find us a pleasure to work with.”

It’s Fire Door Safety Week this week – and social housing, commercial and public sector building landlords are being reminded of their legal obligations and of new tighter regulations which came into force this year in the wake of the Grenfell tragedy.

The awareness week, run by the British Woodworking Federation (BWF) and supported by the Fire Door Alliance, aims to highlight the critical role played by fire doors in saving lives by preventing or inhibiting the spread of smoke, flames and toxic gases.

Obsequio group CEO Simon Abley says: “Fire doors are designed both to contain a fire within the space in which it broke out to allow time for the emergency services to arrive and to enable the building’s occupants access to safe escape routes.

“Between them, our companies CDS, APS, Drax 360 and Drax Technology offer full fire risk assessments, design, installation and maintenance and a range of innovative technologies which can help the responsible persons keep track of their physical fire safety assets, locate the precise source of a fire outbreak and check for false alarms.

“We can help landlords remain compliant and keep their staff, customers, visitors and buildings safe. We provide a one stop shop solution to manage the hassle and complexity of ensuring compliance.”

The Fire Safety (England) Regulations 2022, which came into force in January, make it obligatory for the ‘responsible person’ in all multi-occupied residential buildings in England which are more than 11 metres high to carry out quarterly checks of all fire doors in communal areas and annual checks of all flat entrance doors which lead onto a building’s common areas.

The ruling includes a requirement that occupants should be informed of the importance of fire doors to the safety of their building, to enable them to report any damage or incorrect use.

The FDSW website offers a range of tools aimed at facilities managers and members of the public showing five key elements to look for when checking whether a fire door is compliant.

These include checking for damage to glazing, air grilles or door closers and ensuring seals and hinges are correctly fitted.

Worryingly, research carried out in 2022 by the BWF found that more than 30% of those asked believed that a fire door propped open with a wedge or a fire extinguisher was safe and that 15% believed that keeping a fire door closed stops it performing.

It also found that a third of the British public would not report a problem with a fire door and that almost half wouldn’t take action over a propped open fire door as they wouldn’t know who to report it to.

APS Security & Fire are an authorised Hyfire installer. Our installation team recently completed a project in Leicester.

APS has designed, commissioned and installed a new addressable fire alarm system using the Hyfire Taurus wireless equipment for Sock Snob UK Ltd in Leicester.

The wireless solution was agreed to enable a quick and disruption free installation to allow the client to have cover from their insurers.

Wireless solutions can help combat installation restrictions like asbestos, listed buildings and areas inaccessible for cabling.

Speak with your APS representative now about fire and safety solutions for your workplace.

Here at APS we are committed to an in-depth training plan for all of our staff. One of the best ROIs a business can ensure is to keep their staff up to date with the latest industry trends and regulations. We are very proud to be an NSI Gold and Bafe SP203 accredited company who always puts safety and excellence first.

I’m Jenny, one of the directors here at APS. I am practising what I preach by completing my FIA foundation Part 1 course. It will help me become a more valuable leader to our team. With a better understanding of the method and terminology used in the industry, I will feel more confident.

The course itself was delivered online and was presented in an outstanding way. I would definitely recommend this course to other people. I am already booked for part 2 and looking forward to it!

APS Security and Fire are pleased to announce that we are certified in Cyber Essentials.

Acquiring this certification demonstrates our commitment to safeguarding our sensitive data against cyber attacks.

Our customers can rest assured that our defences will protect against the vast majority of common cyber attacks simply because attackers are looking for targets which do not have the Cyber Essentials technical controls in place.

APS Security & Fire are an authorised Hyfire installer. Our installation team recently completed project in Loughborough.

From Hyfire:

A fine dining restaurant in the East Midlands updated its fire system with minimal inconvenience and disruption thanks to cutting-edge Taurus wireless devices from Hyfire.

The Hammer & Pincers in Wymeswold, near Loughborough, had 45 Hyfire Taurus devices installed as part of a hybrid fire system covering both the ground floor restaurant and a number of residential units above.

Hyfire worked with APS Security & Fire to specify and design the system, which was installed in just a few days, with minimal impact on the aesthetics of the historic building, a former public house.

Chris McGregor, Regional Sales Manager for Hyfire, commented: “This was the sort of project that lends itself perfectly to wireless fire devices. An old and complex building housing a busy restaurant, requiring minimal disruption to the business and to the fabric of the building itself.  Working closely with the owners and with APS, we were able to deliver a system that remains barely noticeable, while delivering all of the fire safety requirements stipulated.”

EMCS (East Midlands Central Station) has announced charges for URNs

Major changes are coming into force this year whereby all alarms that hold a valid URN will be passed electronically via ECHO to the appropriate Police Force.  ECHO (Electronic Call Handing Operations) is a not for profit organisation who automate transmission of alarm signalling to blue light services, in conjunction with the National Police Chiefs Council and key industry players. The rationale behind the initiative is to improve the quality and speed of the Police response to all alarms with a valid URN. Integration into the ECHO initiative is mandatory for all ARC’s (Alarm Receiving Centres) that wish to continue to pass alarms for police response.

Here are the key changes that this will bring:

Steps Together

Dear Customer Service Team, I am writing to formally commend your fire alarm engineer Jay for the exceptional service provided at Steps Together The Chestnuts on Friday 12.06.26 Jay arrived promptly to conduct our system installation and equipment testing. Throughout the visit, their professionalism, technical expertise, and attention to detail were exemplary. They diagnosed and resolved our system issues efficiently while taking the time to clearly explain the work being performed. What impressed me most was their dedication to safety and customer care. Jay meticulously tested every component, ensured our premises were left completely tidy, and patiently waited for a client to complete a one-to-one meeting with their therapist before testing the fire alarm. It is rare to encounter such a high level of dedication and professionalism. Jay is a tremendous asset to your company and has thoroughly earned our trust. Please pass along my sincere thanks and recognition to them for a job well done.

Added Scientific Ltd

Really pleased with the whole process, from beginning to end. The engineer was very polite and did a great job, leaving everywhere very clean and tidy. Thank you!

Hilton Parish Council

We chose APS after a Tender Process. The service that we received from start to finish during the tender process and installation was fantastic. All of their staff are polite, efficient and professional, nothing is too much trouble. The installation engineer who attended our site was helpful, friendly and very knowledgeable. He was also very clean and tidy and cleaned up as he went around, we hardly knew he was there. Brilliant, fantastic service.

Bill – Health & Safety Manager

APS Engineers have had to visit some of our high complex hostels and have carried out all works with the satisfaction from our Service Managers, and all works were carried out professionally, with care, precision and without disruption or incident to our organisations operations. I can recommend him highly and without reservation. APS are very flexible to their response (turning orders around in quick time) and they are extremely clean and tidy in the workplace and never left any of our properties in disarray.

Inspire Gymnastics Academy

I originally came across APS while is was an Estates Manager for a large Educational Academy in Nottingham city. The companies that I inherited where not up to scratch, they would never repair our systems when we had called them out. This created huge admin issues trying to keep an eye on what they still had outstanding. APS and Chris are fantastic at what they do, the technical knowledge from sales to engineers is second to none. They came to site and repaired 98% of all issues they where called out for and I was told what need to be done to correct the other 2% of issues. . I can not recommend them highly enough. I have moved on and I am currently a Director at Inspire Gymnastics Academy and I have ensured the APS are our preferred Fire and Intruder Alarm Company. When we have hundreds of young gymnasts through our doors each night the systems must be spot on and I know Chris and the APS team will deliver. We will not go anywhere else. Thank you for your service and dedication to quality work.

Megavaux Limited

All work has been finished professionally on time and very friendly staff with no business interruptions at all. Chris Bee, was very helpful and Tom the engineer came after installations on 2-3 occasions to help us with additional training. I can recommend this company highly to anyone knowing their service and aftersales. Once again thanks to APS and their staff.

Paul

After repeated poor advice and service from another company we asked Chris Bee to look over the panel and sensors at our Long Eaton office; this was done promptly, resulting in a sensible proposal and we ordered the work to be done. All very satisfactory... we're now talking with Chris about another little project at another office!

The Printers

We had been with Chubb for over thirty year but their service became so bad so we sought three quotes for a new system. APS were very slightly more costly than the other quotes BUT were far superior in their presentation. Chris Bee, their rep, was exceptionally helpful - had all the right advice and offered very good suggestions. We needed a fast installation as Chubb had let us down and APS had the new system in an working within three days. Their installation engineers were also very helpful and took care with the work - one guy took a hoover around cleaning up as they worked in each area. Try phoning their office - the Ladies who answer the phone are cheerful, friendly and know their jobs All in all - a very professional and caring service - I would give them more than a "five" Kevin

Mark – Loss Prevention Manager

We chose APS after a thorough and detailed ‘tender' process because we could tell at an early stage the level of professionalism and customer care we were signing up to. A year has passed and I can safely say our trust was not misplaced. Their office staff are efficient, the engineers are polite, knowledgeable and are willing to support our branches with ad-hoc training when it is required. The working relationship between our two companies is the best we could hope for in terms of understanding each other's requirements and limitations. APS have proven they can adapt to a company's needs without impacting their level of service and customer commitment. We would happily recommend APS Fire & Security to other businesses.
